Noor Inayat Khan’s report from SOE’s Finishing School at Beaulieu dated 21 May 1943. The report has been underlined and scrawled over with comments such as ‘Nonsense’ and ‘We don’t want them overburdened with brains’ and ‘Makes me cross’. These, presumably, are the comments of Maurice Buckmaster as he uses the initial ‘F’. (The National Archives)

Michael Trotobas parachuted into France in November 1942 to set up FARMER, a sabotage network based in Lille. In June 1943 he led his saboteurs in a daring raid on the locomotive works at Fives in the eastern suburbs, leaving the railway yard in a mass of twisted steel and burning rubble. But, in November, the Gestapo caught up with him and he eventually fell dead at his door after the last rounds of his revolver had gone. (Author’s collection)
